Air Force ROTC students at the University of Kentucky and their counterparts from the University of Louisville will run from UK to Frankfort Saturday to honor Prisoners of War and those Missing In Action. The 29-mile run starts a little after 6 a.m. at UK’s Buell Armory and ends at the Vietnam War Memorial. Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Sullivan said it’s a resumption of an old tradition.
“We did this run every year when I was a cadet. So when I came back as the commander this summer , I was kind of, you know, asking about events that were coming up in the fall and asking the cadre that works for me here, you know, when the POW run is going to be and they said that it'd been a few years since the POW run happened.”
Sullivan said they hope people along the route step out to cheer them, and our POWs and MIAs. He said not every runner is expected to run the entire route.
“And it's, you know, an opportunity to, to remember those that have sacrificed so much for our country and an opportunity to kind of push ourselves beyond our own limits, in honor of their sacrifice, and, and honor their service.”
After runners gather at the Vietnam War Memorial, they’ll hold a brief ceremony to honor POWs and MIAs. They’ll take buses back to school.
