UFC tipped to make Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal fight at catchweight

The UFC have been tipped to find a catchweight for a potential showdown between Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal.

McGregor has been competing recently at 155lbs before suffering a broken leg in his trilogy with Dustin Poirier.

However he has also fought at 170lbs where Masvidal plies his trade, with 'Gamebred' having been defeated by Colby Covington at UFC 272.

And retired UFC star Kenny Florian has proposed that the promotion allows two of the biggest names in the sport to alter the rules and find a middle ground.

"That would be an awesome fight. I think that'd be really interesting," Florian said on the Anik & Florian Podcast. "Again, these are two of the biggest names in the sport right now.

"I mean, who's bringing in more pay-per-view buys than these guys right now? Not many. So I think that would be a fascinating fight. Perhaps they make it at catchweight.

"If there's two fighters that would be deserving of the catchweight, it would be those guys. Why not?"

Masvidal was dominated by McGregor and now faces being frozen out of the welterweight title picture after three consecutive defeats which include two against champion Kamaru Usman.

The UFC rarely allows catchweight bouts unless a fighter is drafted in at short notice to replace an injured competitor.

McGregor has recently claimed that he is walking around at 190lb which could signal a more likely return at 170lb, with a trilogy bout against Nate Diaz also proposed at the weight.

Masvidal's agent Malki Kawa has confirmed Masvidal is ready to stage the fight, tweeting: "I saw McGregor in Dublin. He’s not small. He looked like he walks around 195-200lbs jacked."

The 33-year-old has previously suggested he would like to return to lightweight with the amid the prospect of an immediate title shot against the winner of Charles Oliveira's clash against Justin Gaethje.

Boxing star Jake Paul has called out both men in the past and is particularly eyeing a crossover bout with McGregor.

However he has now claimed that Masvidal should take on McGregor next in the aftermath of the American's defeat to Covington.

"We already know Conor can’t finish Diaz," the YouTube boxer said on social media. "[The] right fight to make is [sic] Masvidoll vs Macgregor.

"[It's a] 50/50 fight [which] ends in a KO. Both can throw and both have weak chins."
