UFC Fight Night 225 took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
In the main event, former featherweight champion Max Holloway (25-7 MMA, 21-7 UFC) takes on “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (17-8 MMA, 7-5 UFC). In the co-feature, former light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith (37-18 MMA, 12-8 UFC) meets Ryan Spann (21-9 MMA, 7-4 UFC) in a rematch.

Seungwoo Choi vs. Jarno Errens
Round 1 – Choi opens a leg kick and Errens responds with some kicks of his own. The pair are peppering each other low. Errens lands a stepping overhand but Choi takes it well. He moves into the pocket and lands some more shots. Choi counters the aggression of Errens and lands a tight hook that staggers him and is the biggest shot of the fight so far. Choi presses Errens against the cage. Errens lands an elbow off the fence break and they meet in the middle and trade more shots. Errens lands a pair of crisp punches but Choi looks unfazed. Choi counters with a tight combination and the moment swings in his favor with less than a minute left in the round. Errens shoots a late takedown but it’s stuffed and Choi spends the final seconds sprawled out.
MMA Junkie scores a very close round 10-9 for Errens.
Round 2 – Choi opens the round with some precise punches and is very active with the kicks and forward pressure. Errens responds with a huge uppercut that lands clean and drops Choi to his back. Errens pounces on top and is in side control. Choi managed to roll over and stand up, but Errens had his back in the clinch. Choi lands a nice judo toss and lands in top control. He’s in the guard and is able to posture up and land some elbows with just under two minutes remaining. Choi continues to land the ground-and-pound and maintains control from top for the remainder of the round.
MMA Junkie scores the round 10-9 for Errens due to the knockdown, and he’s up 20-18 on our scorecard.
Round 3 – The fighters hug to stat the round. Choi throws two hard high kicks that are barely blocked. They stand in the middle of the octagon and trade punches and kicks. Choi is the most active fighter with his kicks throughout the first half of the round, but Errens isn’t backing down. Choi lands a straight left hand that’s the best shot of the round so far. Choi lands a vicious low kick that hurts Errens badly and he falls to his back. Choi dives into his guard and is trying to work from on top. The commentators criticize him for not keeping the fight standing, but he’s working from on top with less than 90 seconds remaining. He advances to side control and is landing short elbows. He takes the back as Errens tries to stand up and is working for a choke, but he can’t get it before the final bell.
MMA Junkie scores the round 10-9 for Choi, but it’s 29-28 for Errens on the overall scorecard. But super close. Could go either way.

JJ Aldrich vs. Liang Na
Round 1 – Aldrich lands the first shot 30 seconds in with a straight left punch. Na is trying to push forward but she’s just out of range with her punches. Aldrich counters with a solid right hook. They clash during an exchange and Na pushes Aldrich against the cage then lands a trip takedown. She can’t keep Aldrich down for long, and during the standup scramble managed to establish top control again. Aldrich stands up again and they are back to striking. Aldrich lands a straight left, right hook combination that snaps the head back of Na, who rushes forward and tries another head and arm throw, but it’s countered and Aldrich takes the back. Na spins around and gets out of danger by recovering half guard. Aldrich rides out top control for the remainder of the round.

Round 2 – Na comes out with a combination that’s her best lands of the fight. Na times a perfect takedown and immediately takes the back and pursues a choke. Aldrich scrambles partially out of danger, but Na is still in an advantageous position. Aldrich escapes and is in side control. Aldrich moves into mount and works for submissions while landing ground-and-pound. Na gives up the back and is getting battered with punches and elbows. Na is in survival mode as Aldrich unloads and forces the stoppage with seconds left in the round.

Billy Goff vs. Yusaku Kinoshita
Round 1 – Kinoshita throws a wild head kick early that nearly lands. Goff is trying to land leg kicks but Kinoshita is pressuring big time and landing short punches. Goff is trying to take control of the action but he’s struggling to land clean. Kinoshita lands a multi-punch combination then another short right hook. Goff shoots for the first takedown of the fight but it’s easily stuffed. Kinoshita makes him pay with a body kick and some punches. Kinoshita lands a jumping knee to the body and a grazing head kick shortly thereafter. Goff lands a vicious body punch that immediately folds Kinoshita. He covers up and the fight is over! What a show of durability and pressure from Goff to get the stoppage.

Rolando Bedoya vs. Song Kenan
Round 1 – Bedoya opens the fight with three hard leg kicks followed by an overhand punch that gets Kenan’s attention. Both men are throwing massive punches to start the fight but are just missing. Kenan lands a grazing knee during a brief clinch. Bedoya pushed Kenan against the cage but he can’t keep Kenan there for long. Kenan lands a hard left hand during an awkward exchange and it gives him some confidence. Bedoya gets him back with a combination. Bedoya is constantly attaching the legs and is very active with his kicks. Kenan’s activity leaves something to be desired and Bedoya is taking advantage with a higher output, mostly consisting of kicks. Kenan tries a late takedown, but has no luck.

Round 2 – Kenan rushes Bedoya to start the round, but he can’t hurt him. Bedoya avoids the rush and creates distance, and he goes back to his onslaught of leg kicks. Kenan lands a gorgeous combination that knocks Bedoya down briefly, but he pops back up to the feet. Huge moment for Kenan, but Bedoya is instantly back to forward movement and a more active approach. Kenan keeps his composure and seems to have a beat on his in-and-out attacks from the pocket. Bedoya shoots for a takedown and it’s stuffed, but he has Kenan against the fence. He lands a knee to Kenan’s belly off the clinch, but Kenan tags him with a straight left hand. They trade on the feet to end the round.

Round 3 – Bedoya looks to answer in the final round with a high rate of leg kicks and punches. Kenan checks a kick that staggers Bedoya, then responds with a nice jab and left hook. Bedoya tees up another leg kick, but Kenan continues to show stellar timing with his straight punches and hooks. Bedoya remains calm and is attacking with so many leg kicks, and nearly has 50 landed in the unofficial stats. Kenan scores with another straight right hands with less than two minutes left. Kenan lands a huge straight right hand that briefly drops Bedoya again with a minute left. They strike it out down the stretch, but Song is clearly in control.

Chidi Njokuani vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk
Round 1 – Njokuani opens with big knees in the middle, but Oleksiejczuk eats them and throws back hard. But just 20 seconds in, Nkokuani ties Oleksiejczuk up and lands several more big knees to the body. It’s been about a dozen teeps and a dozen more knees from Njokuani so far. Oleksiejczuk fires a 1-2 down the middle and catches Njokuani, who moves in to tie things up. Oleksiejczuk turns him around and pushes him to the fence with wrist control, but Njokuani uses a knee to get out of there. A low kick takes Oleksiejczuk off his feet, but a few seconds later, Njokuani goes for a takedown – and it fails in a bad way. Oleksiejczuk is on top and trying to pass. After 30 seconds, Oleksiejczuk lets him back up. They trade kicks. But Njokuani lands one up the middle and Oleksiejczuk is wobbly. But out of nowhere, Oleksiejczuk stops retreating and starts firing and has Njokuani hurt and backing up. With 75 seconds left in the round, Oleksiejczuk gets a takedown and starts hammering away on Njokuani like he’s just tired of this already. Njokuani covers up and ref Thomas Fann steps in to shut things down. Njokuani landed some beautiful kicks and knees and looked great – except for a couple mistakes that appear to have cost him. Fantastic fight, given it was only a little more than four minutes.

Garrett Armfield vs. Toshiomi Kazama
Round 1 – Armfield comes straight to the center and fires a quick jab. Kazama answers with a kick, but eats a punch from Armfield. These two had the best faceoff at the ceremonial weigh-ins, and they’re coming out swinging. Armfield moves in, and he’s landing just about everything. Kazama shoots from about a mile away and Armfield easily sprawls out of it. About 90 seconds in, Armfield moves in and lands a right hand, then a forearm. Kazama tries another lazy shot, which is just evidence of how much Armfield is landing on the feet. Every time Armfield throws, it’s two or three. Kazama has been left to mostly single counterpunches, and they’re not landing nearly as often. Armfield drills Kazama with a jab with 2:15 left and then goes to work. Kazama is in trouble, and with 1:50 left Armfield tells him to stand up. Kazama isn’t that interested in going back up for more punishment, but the ref gives no choice. Armfield moves in again and puts together another dozen. And with 50 seconds left, Armfield drills him with a right hand and sits him down immediately. Ref Kevin Sataki is quick to move in with one of the best stoppages you’ll see in terms of not letting Kazama take any more damage. It was clear what was going to happen. Armfield has made his career out of first-round finishes, and now he has another one.

Lukasz Brzeski vs. Waldo Cortes-Acosta
Round 1 – Brzeski opens with some low kicks. Cortes-Acosta throws some of his own and a jab, but Brzeski throws two more. Then another couple. But Cortes-Acosta lands a hard right –– maybe his best punch. Brzeski fires a high kick and partially lands, and Cortes-Acosta has to return fire quickly to keep him at bay. But a few seconds later, Cortes-Acosta catches Brzeski and has him hurt. Brzeski is wobbly and turns his back to try to escape. Cortes-Acosta punches him from behind, then again. Brzeski faceplants. It’s over. Absolutely destructive knockout from Cortes-Acosta in a fight he likely was losing, at least on volume. Impressive win, for sure. Brzeski landed hard, but is up and appears to be OK.

Round 1 – Big boys are up next. Porter fought Justin Tafa a few fights ago and now gets his brother Junior. Early, Tafa lands a combination including a big knee that rocks Porter, who scrambles for a leg. Porter grabs Tafa and shoves him against the fence. Tafa breaks and lands a big elbow. Everything Tafa lands seems to put Porter on roller skates. They’re swinging and Porter looks hurt. Tafa charges in and throws a massive overhand right that face-plants Porter – and that’s it! Big TKO for Tafa.

Round 1 – Feinting a ton, Blanchfield avoids a Santos combination. Santos lands a hard leg kick and another. Santos lands a combination. Blanchfield tries to tie up Santos, who defends. Santos lands again. She’s throwing bombs. Blanchfield shoots and Santos sweeps her leg with a kick. Blanchfield is bleeding from the bridge of her nose. Blanchfield lands a punch and Santos returns. Blanchfield enters for a shot but pulls up and drills Santos with a punch. Blanchfield shoving Santos against the fence. Santos shoves Blanchfield away and swings wildly. Blanchfield shoots and Santos threatens a knee. Blanchfield closes again and eats a knee. Blanchfield tries a throw. The fighters hit the mat but Santos positioned herself away from Blanchfield’s weight, so she got right up. Blanchfield grabs hold of Santos again, against the fence where the first round finishes out. 10-9 Santos.
Round 2 – Blanchfield comes out chucking. They trade. Blanchfield shoots and Santos stuffs her. Blanchfield lands a hard punch and they trade. Blanchfield shoots and Santos throws her to the canvas. Blanchfield still has a hold of Santos and she can’t get her down. It looked like Blanchfield had the proper grip for that one, but Santos did everything in her power to prevent it. Blanchfield holding Santos against the fence. Santos lands a sneaky elbow. Blanchfield tries for an inside trip but Santos still maintains upright. Santos tries for a takedown of her own and that backfires. Blanchfield lands on top. Wow. What a mistake by Santos. Blanchfield is in Santos’ guard. Santos threatens an armbar. Blanchfield passes to half guard, then side control. Blanchfield takes Santos’ back but doesn’t have hooks in. Santos stands up against the fence and now Blanchfield is back to just pushing her against the fence. They separate and Blanchfield shoots. The round ends with the fighters in the clinch. 19-19.
Round 3 – They jab. Blanchfield lands a combination, then a leg kick. Santos is coming up just short on her punches. Blanchfield’s striking is looking decent this round. Blanchfield charges in for a double leg agains the fence. They break. Blanchfield shoots again. She is relentless. They break and Blanchfield is on her again. Santos shoots again and nearly gives up her neck. They’re back in the center. Blanchfield lands a combination and a leg kick. Blanchfield shoots again. Blanchfield breaks and lands a combination. Blanchfield briefly drags Santos down. They break. Santos is really tired. Blanchfield lands a combination, followed by a head kick. Blanchfield drops Santos with an elbow! Santos pops up and the horn rings. 29-28 Blanchfied.

Round 1 – Nakamura comes out with bounding pressure. Garcia circling. Nakamura lands and, moments later, he shoots. Nakamura, a national wrestling champion in Japan, gets what he was looking for. Garcia uses the cage to get up and is absolutely tossed over sideways. That was something else. Nakamura moves and attempts a north-south choke. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen one of these in the UFC. Garcia’s face is red and he’s bucking his hips. Garcia gets out but Nakamura threatens for an arm submission. They scramble and Nakamura lands some pretty big punches before the round ends. 10-9 Nakamura.
Round 2 – Garcia comes out aggressive. That’s a noticeable demeanor change following his conversation with coach Sayif Saud in the corner. Garcia lands a leg kick that knocks Nakamura off balance. They swing wildly. Nakamura lands a right hand followed by a leg kick. Garcia freezes a bit and Nakamura secures a takedown. Garcia threatens a guillotine choke but Nakamura swings his hips up and over. Nakamura briefly tries a Von Flue choke but gives up on it. Nakamura is back in north-south. Nakamura moves to side control and isolates Garcia’s right arm. Garcia’s left arm is trapped. Garcia gets his second arm out and fights off the submission. The round ends. 20-18 Nakamura.
Round 3 – Garcia lands and Nakamura swiftly takes him down. Nakamura is constantly looking for submissions on the ground. Nakamura threatens an arm-triangle choke, then tries to move to Garcia’s back. Nakamura gives up on that and ends up in half guard. Now in side control, Nakamura tries an armbar. Garcia escapes but Nakamura remains on top. Garcia scrambles to his feet against the fence. They separate. Garcia comes forward and eats a big jumping head kick right before the round and fight end. Round 1 – No touch of gloves. Lots of kicks coming from both men. Some are blocked. Some are getting through. Chikadze using great footwork to evade danger. Caceres pumps his jab. This is real technical striking battle thus far. Chikadze’s success rate on strikes is increasing as the round progresses and it could be to an upped level of aggression. Chikadze lands a combination. He presses Caceres and lands more strikes before the round ends. A good back-and-forth technical battle thus far, but Chikadze is a step ahead. 10-9 Chikadze
Round 2 – Chikadze picks up where he left off. The kicks are his weapon of choice. Caceres lands a combination and smiles. Chikadze confidently lands a combination that drills Caceres in the face. Caceres throws and Chikadze counters him. Caceres now is getting a bit wild and aggressive, but he lands a combination. Caceres whiffs on a spinning kick. Chikadze throws a hard right hand down the pipe that snaps Caceres’ head back. Caceres lands a left hook. Caceres throws and Chikadze hits him again. Caceres stumbles backward. Caceres lands a spinning back kick to the body. Chikadze lands a high kick as the round ends. 20-18 Chikadze.
Round 3 – Chikadze lands a punch and Caceres moves forward. They trade kicks. Chikadze drills Caceres with a big counter punch. Chikadze jabs. Caceres lands and Chikadze follows. Chikadze is hammering the kick to the head, body, and leg. Caceres continues his attack, though. He may not be winning the fight but he’s staying confident and finding success intermittently. Caceres teeps the lead leg of Chikadze, who lands a right hand. They jab. Chikadze doubles up on the leg kick, then goes body-head with two more kicks. Caceres kicks the leg, then head. Caceres bites down on the mouthpiece and comes forward. Chikadze rips the body with a kick. Caceres lands a spinning back fist. Caceres smiles and runs forward. Caceres spins wildly and Chikadze throws a rolling thunder. Caceres nearly ducked right into it. Chikadze gets up. The horn sounds and the two fighters embrace. That was a fun, technical battle. Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann
Round 1 – Rematch time. Smith won the first meeting in September 2021 by first-round submission. They trade and clinch. Spann lands a front kick to the body. Smith connects on a left hand – and another. Smith is the aggressor thus far but Smith is landing. A big right hand connects for Smith. As Spann moves forward, Smith knocks him off balance with a leg kick. Another hard leg kick nearly knocks Spann over again. Smith catches a Spann kick and tries to sweep the remaining leg. Smith is looking fantastic thus far. Spann gets wild and Smith ducks under the attack. Smith takes Spann down. Spann briefly threatens a guillotine but he doesn’t have it. Smith is on top of Spann in half guard. Smith attempts to pass into mount but Spann muscles his way up to the feet. Smith lands another hard leg kick. Spann lands a right hand. Smith goes back to the leg. The horn sounds. That was a near perfect round by Smith. 10-9 Smith.
Round 2 – They exchange. Spann clips Smith, who retreats. That doesn’t look good. It appears Smith’s left eye has some serious damage. That was nearly instant. Spann runs across the cage and leaps for a flying knee. Spann pounds away but Smith grabs hold of a knee. Spann spends some time on top. The fight gets back to the feet. I’m surprised the referee isn’t having the doctor come check Smith’s eye. It is absolutely gnarly. I’m also scratching my head as to why Spann let Smith off the hook here. Smith seemed seriously rattled/hurt by the injury but is getting back into the fight. Smith lands a punch that has Spann on his back foot. The round ends – and who knows what the doctor will say in between rounds. We’ll find out soon, but for now: 19-19.
Round 3 – After one of the more thorough examinations by a cage-side physician that I’ve ever seen, Smith is allowed to continue. Smith and Spann embrace to start the round. They exchange. Smith goes back to leg kicks. Both fighters have slowed significantly. Smith goes with two more leg kicks, then an overhand. Spann is not throwing much, if at all. Finally, Smith lets his hands go in an exchange and the right hand knocks Smith backward. Smith returns. Spann lands a one-two combination. Smith lands a nice counter. They both land hooks. Spann misses on a spinning wheel kick. The horn sounds. Man, that round was close. 29-28 Smith.

Max Holloway vs. Chan Sung Jung
Round 1 – After two electric and emotional walkouts, the fight is underway and the crowd is loud. Jung sports a knee brace on his right knee in what could be his final bout. They trade leg kicks. Jung rocks Holloway! Wow! Jung rushes in and he gets tagged! What a sequence. Neither men went down but both were clearly stunned. They reset, as both men likely work to regain their bearings. Holloway lands a nice counter as Jung moves in. Jung lands another nice combination. Holloway connects on a combination. Jung connects. As the clacker hits, Jung explodes with another multi-strike sequence that connects. The horn sounds. Close, but I think Holloway’s big shot early was the most damaging blow of the fight thus far. 10-9 Holloway.
Round 2 – Holloway drops Jung early. Jung went face down and Holloway chose not to hit him again. The referee didn’t stop it, though, and Jung dives for a leg. Holloway immediately locks in an anaconda choke and turns. Jung is in trouble but he’s defending best he can. After an elongated struggle, Jung pops out.
