Fans have mocked Conor McGregor after the former two-weight UFC champion recently claimed he is an "underrated athlete".
McGregor, 34, is still recovering from a broken tibia he suffered against Dustin Poirier in their trilogy fight last July. He is expected to make his octagon return in the first quarter of next year, but recently worried fans after admitting his compromised leg is not at the "absolute level" needed to make a UFC comeback.
If the Irishman is to return next year, it will mark over three years since he won a fight. McGregor was stopped twice by Poirier last year, with his last win coming in January 2020 against now-retired UFC veteran Donald Cerrone. McGregor received backlash on social media after recently tweeting a picture of himself with the caption "underrated athlete" as fans were quick to remind him of his losing form in the octagon.
One user replied: "Overrated and finished," with another adding: "You mean overrated athlete, you've been washed up for three years." McGregor's achievements in the sport are undeniable, with the brash Irishman clearing out the featherweight division before becoming the first UFC fighter in history to hold two belts in different weight classes simultaneously.
McGregor's recent form has been a contrast to his early days in the UFC, only winning one of his four fights in the promotion. Another user replied: "Underrated? You’re the size of a springer spaniel and you convinced the world you can batter any man (Khabib aside)."
Many fans have questioned who McGregor will face in his UFC return, with a lightweight title bout between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev scheduled for UFC 280 in October.
Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is also booked to defend his belt next weekend, as another used told the UFC star: "Conor loses to any champion currently and it's not even a question my guys legs couldn't even handle Dustin."
McGregor recently teased a triumphant return to fighting, posting a compilation video of his past fights with the caption: "The greatest and the biggest sports comeback in history. Will you be a witness?".
It was recently announced that McGregor would feature in a Hollywood remake of Road House alongside actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Filming is set to take place in the Dominican Republic later this month, which has brought McGregor's UFC return plans into question.
