UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski explains why he wants Conor McGregor fight

After beating most of the former champions in his division, Alexander Volkanovski is targeting a clash with UFC star Conor McGregor.

Featherweight champion Volkanovski is the No.2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter and is one of the most dominant champions on the UFC roster. He is currently unbeaten in 21 fights and recently defended his belt at UFC 273 against The Korean Zombie.

Volkanovski has previously beaten former UFC featherweight champions Max Holloway and Jose Aldo. McGregor is the only other former 145-pound champion in the UFC, something that entices Volkanovski as he explained on My Mom's Basement with Robbie Fox.

"He is the only other champion in my division that I haven't fought yet," Volkanovski said. "I've beat every other champion so it makes a lot of sense. It's something that I want, purely because of money and the circus around it, hype and all that s***.

"I want all the legends in my division, I've taken out most of them. He's one of them as he's held that belt. I want to take out all the guys that have held this belt and leave no one else in this division but me. If you want that 'goat' status and that's what I want, to take out all these guys so it makes a lot of sense."

McGregor was recently named among the top three UFC fighters of all-time by Volkanovski, but contradictory ranked last in the of featherweight champions in the promotion because of his short title reign at the weight class.

“You need [title] defences, that’s the thing. I’m going to give him respect, the dude can fight, but again, I feel like I’ve definitely done a lot more than him so out of all the champions, I’d say he would have to be at the bottom of the list. He ain’t going to like that but whatever," Volkanovski said.

McGregor never defended the featherweight belt after knocking out Jose Aldo in 2015 to win the belt. A fight between the Irishman and Volkanovski is unlikely given McGregor is targeting a bout at 170-pounds when he returns to the cage later this year.

It's not the first time Volkanovski has called out McGregor for a fight, with the Irishman previously telling him: "I’d kick this volovski head off like it was a rugby ball I was kicking. 5’4! And full of muscle! Hahahahaha little fart he is. Not even a little fart. A s****".
