UConn and men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley have reached a significant agreement, signing a six-year, $50 million contract extension that will keep Hurley at the helm through the 2029-30 season. This decision comes shortly after Hurley declined an enticing offer to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, opting instead to continue leading the two-time defending NCAA champions.
Under the terms of the new contract, Hurley stands to earn additional compensation through performance-based incentives. The agreement includes a base annual salary of $400,000, with opportunities for increased earnings from speaking engagements, consulting work, and media obligations. For the upcoming season, Hurley is set to receive $6.375 million.
In addition to the base salary and performance incentives, the contract features a $1 million annual retention bonus. The funding for this lucrative deal will be sourced from augmented ticket sales revenue and contributions from the Husky Athletic Fund. This new agreement supersedes the previous six-year, $32.1 million contract that was finalized in June 2023 following UConn's national championship victory.
With an impressive coaching record of 141-58 in six seasons with UConn and 292-163 overall in his tenure as a Division I head coach, Hurley was pursued by other prestigious programs. Despite receiving a tempting offer from the Lakers and being considered for the head coaching position at Kentucky, Hurley reaffirmed his commitment to UConn. In a statement, he expressed his pride in representing the school and emphasized his dedication to pursuing excellence both on and off the court.
UConn President Radenka Maric lauded Hurley as the nation's premier men’s basketball coach and expressed delight in his decision to remain with the program. Athletic director David Benedict commended Hurley and his wife Andrea for their unwavering dedication to rebuilding the UConn basketball program. Benedict highlighted the significant progress made under Hurley's leadership and underscored the ongoing commitment required to sustain and elevate the program's success.
As UConn looks ahead to the future, the focus remains on achieving championships and fostering the development of outstanding young athletes. The collective efforts of the coaching staff, players, and supporters have been instrumental in the program's resurgence, and the university is poised to build upon this foundation for continued success.
