Ubisoft responds to "unfortunate" Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced leaks, says they're from "an old internal version of the game"

In Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Edward Kenway fires a flintlock pistol at an enemy soldier .

It's not that often that you see a game developer respond to leaks of its work, let alone confirm them, but Ubisoft has spoken out to clarify that, yes, certain Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced leaks are real, but they're so old that you can expect the real version to look pretty different.

At the start of last month, Ubisoft revealed that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced really does exist – confirming what it felt like we'd already known for years, thanks to constant leaks and rumors going back to 2023. From information appearing online, to an age rating giving away the remake's name before its official announcement, there's a reason why Ubisoft is now calling it "gaming's worst-kept secret," and that's not changed even since the developer announced a proper reveal showcase is taking place tomorrow, April 23.

On Twitter, Ubisoft has now responded to two screenshots of the remake that are doing the rounds – one seemingly taken from gameplay, and the other of a cutscene. One user sharing them suggests that the former is a look at the game with low graphics settings, since "it looks ROUGH." However, it seems that Ubisoft wants to put any fears to rest about what the final product will look like.

"Hey! This is footage from an old internal version of the game," it writes, surprisingly matter-of-factly. "It's unfortunate it got out, but the good news is you only have to wait one more day for the official reveal."

"Unfortunate" is certainly the word – it's ironic that a remake of a game about sailing the seven seas has been quite so leaky, and you can't imagine that this is what Ubisoft had in mind for its marketing when development started. Notably, these images aren't the only leaks floating around, either – some footage is also circulating from what fans allege is from a leaked trailer. Ubisoft hasn't responded to this, however, so make of that what you will.

As Ubisoft points out, though, it's not long at all now until we get to properly see what the devs have been cooking up. To be exact, the reveal showcase will take place tomorrow at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST, so we have around 24 hours from now to go.

"Assassin's Creed Black Flag is the best pirate game of all time" according to Windrose devs, so of course they "took inspiration" from it for their viral open-world seafaring game.
