Ubisoft is in the middle of developing a Far Cry multiplayer game alongside Far Cry 7, sources familiar with the projects told Kotaku. The news comes after Ubisoft reported lower earnings than expected, canceled several in-development games, and delayed its pirate game Skull and Bones once again.
Far Cry 7’s reported existence comes as no surprise, considering the survival game series is one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. Far Cry 5 was Ubisoft’s second best-selling game at launch, and the publisher said Far Cry 6 improved on those numbers.
The unexpected project is Far Cry multiplayer. As Kotaku noted in their report, some Far Cry games have a multiplayer or competitive component of some kind. This would be the first standalone multiplayer game, though, not unlike 343 Industries did with Halo Infinite.
Details about the game aside from its potential existence are scarce, and Ubisoft declined to comment on “rumors or speculation” when Kotaku asked for confirmation. Several of Ubisoft’s canceled games were reportedly competitive multiplayer games or battle royale games of some kind, but were unattached to established IP.
If Ubisoft is still aiming to replicate its success in the online sphere with Rainbow Six Siege, it makes sense to try with a franchise that already has a devoted audience.
