Cameras caught the shocking moment an Uber Eats driver stole three parcels from an apartment building reception after dropping off a McDonald's order.
A resident who lives in the luxury apartment block at 49 Hurst Street, Liverpool had ordered a sausage and egg McMuffin on Uber Eats on Saturday, November 5.
At 10:44am, the woman headed downstairs to meet the Uber Eats rider, who had a Deliveroo rucksack, and collect her McDonald's meal at the building's reception area. After the tenant gave him an 81p tip and headed back up to her flat, the delivery man was caught on CCTV swiping a number of parcels from a nearby coffee table.
Later on, another person living in the apartment complex told the building manager than her parcels had been delivered but that she couldn't find them. This prompted the worker to check the building's security cameras, catching the thief red-handed, the Liverpool Echo reports.
The building manager, who has worked in the apartment building since it was first built in 2019, said: "The tenant came to us saying she'd lost her parcels, even though there was proof of delivery, so we looked at the security cameras. There was quite a lot of footage to go through, but then we saw this delivery driver.
"Everyone in the office was just shocked, we couldn't believe what we watched. I was flabbergasted.
"You see delivery riders as being no different to the post man, people trust them and welcome them into their homes. This footage shows you just can't trust them or anybody. I want this to be a warning to people to make sure they keep an eye on delivery riders in the future."
The employee also shared the footage to social media, asking Uber Eats and Deliveroo to help catch the thief. Merseyside Police have also been contacted over the incident.
The twitter account Deliveroo Help replied to the post and said: "Hi there, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Please drop us a DM with your contact email address so we can follow this up."
A spokesperson for Deliveroo said: “Deliveroo takes rider conduct very seriously. We’re investigating what’s happened and if the rider was working for Deliveroo at the time.”
An Uber Eats spokesperson said: “We take a zero tolerance approach to any illegal activity on our app and reserve the right to immediately terminate access to the platform. We are currently investigating this incident."
Since the incident, the building manager said he was now thinking about "spending a lot of money" buying a parcel locker for his tenants to make sure there is not a repeat of the situation.
He said: "We have never had anything like this happen, but now I am thinking about getting the parcel locker. I just want light shed on this incident so people are aware."
