The U.N. envoy focusing on sexual violence in conflict has issued a warning to Israel regarding the recent findings of sexual violence against hostages taken by Hamas during an attack in southern Israel. The envoy emphasized that this information does not justify further hostilities but rather calls for a humanitarian cease-fire to end the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and secure the release of all hostages.

The report presented to the U.N. Security Council highlighted instances of rape, sexualized torture, and other cruel acts committed by Hamas during the attack, resulting in significant casualties and hostages. The envoy stressed the urgent need for a cease-fire to protect the civilians in Gaza from further violence, including sexual violence.

Israel's Foreign Minister attended the council meeting and condemned the crimes committed by Hamas, urging the Security Council to take action against the extremist group and secure the release of hostages. He also called for condemnation of the sexual violence crimes perpetrated in the name of the Muslim religion.

The Palestinian U.N. ambassador expressed the dire situation in Gaza, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to address the ongoing suffering and displacement of the Palestinian people. He called for equal attention to reports of sexual assault against Palestinians and invited international investigations into the alleged violations.

The U.N. envoy recommended that Israel allow access to human rights organizations for full investigations into the reported violations. She highlighted instances of sexual violence during detentions in the West Bank and urged authorities to take action to prevent such acts.

Overall, the call for a humanitarian cease-fire and investigations into the reported violations underscores the pressing need for international intervention to address the escalating conflict and protect the rights of civilians in the region.
