Tyson Fury's brother Roman wins debut fight in front of world champion sibling

Tyson Fury's younger brother Roman celebrated a successful professional debut last night when he won his first fight as his sibling watched from the sidelines.

Joining Tyson was his dad John and his Love Island star brother Tommy, who were at ringside as he took a comfortable points decision. Roman won every round against a tough journeyman whose 2-25 record only includes five stoppage losses in a solid debut, with fans on Twitter joking that he looked like the more impressive of the world heavyweight champion's siblings.

He managed to look far from the novice that he is as he bossed the ring against a fighter with considerably more experience, insisting that he was keen not to swing wildly. And in a bout that was always going to be about getting rounds in, he managed to take every one and pick up a solid debut victory.

The younger Fury plans to campaign at cruiserweight during his career, and his brother has said that the team are taking "baby steps" with his career. He had never competed in any sort of boxing competition before last night's clash in Doncaster, which saw a large crowd gather to watch as he made his bow.

"It felt incredible," he told VIP Boxing after the win. "The past four weeks since I've known about the fight I've been nothing but a bag of nerves - I was terrified. I had bad dreams and no sleep, but as soon as I got in there, fate took over, I've never been as calm in my life. I felt sharp, good and I'm so happy, thanks to God, thank you very much.

"I didn't know how I was going to react when I got in there because I had never experienced it before in my life, but the main thing I was keeping in my head was 'don't go and look like a complete novice going swinging and landing nothing'. My dad drilled it into me; pick your shots right, when you throw the shots and they land, make them count and that's what I did."

Roman had been struggling with his mental health after his rugby career was stalled during coronavirus lockdowns, but he found his calling when Tommy invited him to the boxing gym. He has grown up around the sport, but generally left the competition aspect to his brothers, who have competed on some major shows.

And his brother Tyson was impressed with his showing, telling ID Boxing : "I'm very, very impressed. Roman's never had a fight before amateur or professional and from what I've seen tonight I really liked what I've seen. He did very, very fantastic and I'm so proud of him, well done Roman.

"He did okay tonight, he did really well but you can't compare these fighters [Tommy and Roman] to me because I was an open-class international amateur boxer, Roman's never had an amateur fight before, this was his first fight ever; amateur, pro, pretend, whatever, this was his first fight. You can't judge it the same way, I'd won amateur titles, but it was what it was."
