Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell is hoping his impressive form could earn an England call-up.
England assistant boss Steve Holland was at Selhurst Park on Monday night and 20-year-old Mitchell would have caught his eye with another good display. It comes with Gareth Southgate facing a selection headache at left-back as he prepares to name his squad on Thursday for the forthcoming friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
Chelsea's Ben Chilwell is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury, another option would be Kieran Trippier but he is out for weeks with a metatarsal problem and that leaves Southgate short of options. Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is back in first team contention after injuries, Covid and a lack of game time as he returned to training this week.
But England boss Southgate has been looking at other left-backs with Mitchell catching the eye this season as a key part of Patrick Vieira’s success story at Palace.
Southgate has already made a check on Mitchell and the left-back helped Palace keep a clean sheet against Manchester City on Monday night.
Newcastle ’s Matt Targett is another option with Southgate set to name a squad for both internationals knowing that he could lose players to injury and may rest and rotate between the two fixtures after the heavy recent fixture list.
Leicester pair James Justin and Luke Thomas have also been watched and Southgate has name-checked Justin in the past but he has just returned from injury. Thomas has also impressed at left-back in recent weeks.
