Manchester United still recognise Luke Shaw as their first-choice left-back ahead of the expected arrival of Tyrell Malacia.
United have agreed a €15million (£12.9m) deal to sign left-back Malacia, 22, from Feyenoord amid firm interest from Lyon.
Malacia is seen as credible competition for Shaw, who turns 27 next month and has failed to maintain sustained form in consecutive seasons during his eight years with United.

Shaw is approaching the final year of his contract but United have the option of an additional year to tie him to the club until 2024. Shaw would nearly be 29 at the end of his deal and United allowed 29-year-olds Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard to run down their contracts.
United were always open to reinforcing at full-back going into the summer transfer window but the position was not considered a priority. Lyon's approach for Malacia and Erik ten Hag's admiration for the Netherlands international spurred United into moving for him.
The expected arrival of Malacia would leave United with nine recognised full-backs and all bar FA Youth Cup winner Marc Jurado have either played or been involved with the first-team.
Brandon Williams was already seeking a loan or permanent transfer before United struck a deal for Malacia and his situation remains unchanged. United have also told enquiring clubs they are prepared to negotiate for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Alex Telles's United future is now uncertain as he would effectively be the third-choice left-back with Malacia in the squad.
Telles, 29, played frequently following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal in November but his performances were widely criticised and he is not regarded as a credible competitor for Shaw by Ten Hag and his staff.
Telles regained his place in the Brazil squad last season and would likely have to play regularly to ensure his stays in coach Tite's squad for the World Cup in November.
