The NFL’s 2023 head coach hiring cycle is officially complete, as the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals filled their open roles on Tuesday, hiring Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon, respectively.
That means that, once again, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was passed up for a head coaching job despite helping Patrick Mahomes and company win two Super Bowls in the last four years.

In the five years since Bieniemy took over as offensive coordinator, the Chiefs have never finished below sixth in scoring (28.5 points per game in 2020). They’ve also finished first twice (29.2 in 2022 and 34.8 in 2018).
While many will attribute this success to Mahomes, that hasn’t stopped other offensive coordinators who had talented quarterbacks from getting head coaching gigs.
In New England, Tom Brady helped both Josh McDaniels (essentially twice) and Bill O’Brien get jobs. In Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers did the same for Joe Philbin, who wound up in Miami, and Nathaniel Hackett, who flamed out after one year in Denver.
Hill has a point.
