Two year ban handed out to fan after Parnell Park melee

A TWO year ban for a supporter is among a raft of punishments doled out by Leinster GAA chiefs after a fight in a recent intermediate hurling tie spilled into the stands.

Another fan was hit with a 48 week ban after an ugly melee in the recent Naomh Barróg/Oulart-the-Ballagh Leinster quarter-final tie at Parnell Park.

Both suspensions accepted by the individuals - one from each club - cited by Leinster disciplinary chiefs.

Nine players were also handed proposed bans, with one accepting the punishment and the other eight appealing.

One fan was caught on camera in the stands repeatedly striking with a hurl while others threw punches.

Naomh Barróg, who won the tie on penalties, have accepted a €2,000 fine and the loss of home advantage for the Leinster intermediate final, should they get there.

It’s likely that Oulart-the-Ballagh were hit with the same fine and loss of home advantage, but Leinster have confirmed that they will contest the proposed punishments.

Leinster GAA have confirmed the bans and said they will be making no further comment until disciplinary proceedings are completed.

Meanwhile, Galway are the first county in history to spend more than €2 million on their inter-county teams in a single season.

County chiefs described the €2.16 million figure as concerning, with the spend rocketing from just one €1.17 million in the Covid-hit 2021 season.

A whopping €1.7 million of the eye watering figure was spent on the senior hurlers and footballers.

Galway had minor and senior hurling teams in the All-Ireland semi-finals, while their minor and senior football teams reached the All-Ireland finals, with the minors winning and the senior losing to Kerry.

However, Galway still returned a surplus in their accounts of over €400,000 with revenues from streaming club championships playing a huge role in this.

It is understood that jersey sponsors Supermacs will renew their €400,000 per annum deal with the county next week in a further boost to Galway GAA.
