Two workers died at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York after they became trapped in a trench, according to the city's fire department.
The incident occurred Monday near Terminal 7.
"Due to ongoing emergency activity, please expect roadway delays in vicinity of Terminals 5 and 7 at JFK Airport," the airport’s official Twitter page said in a tweet.
Two workers were removed from a trench and were declared dead at the scene, according to a report by Fox News Digital.
The workers were reportedly killed when the trench collapsed, according to WABC. Construction rubble toppled onto the workers, trapping them, according to a tweet from the official airport account.
“At approximately 11:08 a.m. today, PAPD received a report of two workers trapped under construction rubble at JFK International Airport. PAPD ESU, FDNY and EMS responded to the scene,” the tweet read. “Both workers have been confirmed dead.”
The airport said all construction at the facility has ceased and that an investigation is underway.
“A stop order for all construction at JFK has been issued. The Port Authority is conducting a thorough investigation and will be cooperating with all other investigative agencies,” the airport continued.
Approximately 60 firefighters responded to the scene, but they were unable to save the workers, according to ABC 7.
Delays at the terminal due to the emergency activity have forced travelers into Terminal 5, which has caused slowdowns there.
“Due to heavy traffic at Terminal 5, departing passengers are recommended access Terminal 5 via free AirTrain from Lefferts Blvd or Federal Circle Stations,” the airport tweeted on Monday afternoon.
