In April, a Brazilian surgical team reported that a 62-year-old woman's right latissimus dorsi was simply not there when they opened her back for a delayed breast reconstruction. Six weeks later, a Swiss team published almost the same surprise in a 69-year-old.
Neither woman had any idea. Both had lived into their sixties with one of the broadest muscles in the human body missing on one side, and neither had a symptom that pointed to it.
