Two-Time Cancer Survivor Now Pays It Forward Through Her Life-Changing Organization

The Resource Hub, a community-focused nonprofit, aims to turn urgency into action, raising awareness and mobilizing support for families facing material and emotional strain. Rooted in a belief that timely, compassionate responses can change daily realities, the organization raises funds and supports initiatives designed to meet immediate needs while fostering longer-term stability.

Building on this commitment, The Resource Hub focuses on helping ensure that children are not affected by adult concerns over bills, housing, or basic necessities. "Our programs are designed to meet essential needs in ways that honor dignity and provide stability," Green states. "When families have that foundation, they can turn their energy toward growth and opportunity instead of daily struggles."

Green founded The Resource Hub after an experience that reshaped her sense of purpose. Diagnosed with cancer on her 27th birthday and hospitalized for months, she remembers how small acts of care became lifelines for her family. Nurses arranged a holiday visit and provided essentials when she could not be home, and that kindness stayed with her.

"When strangers stepped in to care for my children, I understood how a single, kind gesture can ripple into a family's future," Green says. Her recovery and that memory spurred a sustained commitment to create spaces where other families could receive practical help and emotional reassurance.

The Resource Hub's signature celebration, for instance, is an annual holiday event that has grown from modest beginnings into a cherished community tradition. In its early years, Green and her family delivered gifts to just a few households. The initiative has expanded into a multi-day gathering each December, serving over 10,500 children to date.

This year marks the 16th Annual Christmas Giveaway, offering children an inclusive, activity-filled experience. Each child receives a passport to collect stamps from activity stations, and completing the passport earns a carefully chosen gift, as well as a bag of multiple gifts to open on Christmas Day. Families also share a meal, creating moments of connection that many parents who work multiple jobs rarely have the chance to enjoy. Alongside games and treats, the celebration provides new clothing, shoes, toys, and food baskets so that holiday joy is paired with meaningful support.

Besides the annual Christmas event, The Resource Hub's other programs reflect attention to everyday challenges many families face. Hunger remains a pressing issue. In 2024, over 670 million people experienced food insecurity, and about 23% of children under five years old were estimated to be stunted due to chronic undernutrition. The Resource Hub responds by offering regular food distributions that resemble a grocery experience, with fresh produce, protein options, and choices that acknowledge dietary preferences.

Addressing nutrition is only part of the picture, and the nonprofit extends its efforts to other essentials that shape a child's confidence and a family's stability. Clothing distributions and school supply drives help children feel prepared and included in the classroom, reinforcing a sense of belonging. "A pair of pants can seem small to an adult," Green states, "but for a child, it can restore confidence and reduce the risk of feeling excluded." The Resource Hub also provides assistance with housing and utility needs when possible, working to protect families from the disruption that comes when basic services are at risk.

To help ensure support reaches those who need it most, the organization has built multiple pathways for families to connect with its services. Families are referred through schools, community partners, and resource directories, while outreach on social platforms helps extend awareness.

Accessibility remains central to the mission, with programs offered throughout the year. These include a mobile pantry that rotates across neighborhoods twice monthly, a summer snack initiative that fills gaps left when school meals pause, and an annual resource fair that gathers health screenings, eye exams, and vendor assistance in one place. Each effort is designed to minimize barriers and provide families with practical options tailored to their circumstances.

Green emphasizes that behind these programs is a small but dedicated operation that combines volunteer labor, community donations, and support from local providers. Now, the organization seeks to expand logistical capacity by acquiring storage facilities and a mobile unit to streamline inventory management and widen outreach. These steps will help The Resource Hub reach neighborhoods where needs are pronounced and where families may face transportation or scheduling obstacles.

Given its dedication, The Resource Hub has been honored with the Jefferson Award for community service, a distinction that recognizes its impact on families through programs ranging from food distribution and utility assistance to clothing support, health screenings, and childcare. The award reflects the dedication of staff, volunteers, and donors who sustain daily operations and major events.

Overall, The Resource Hub's work combines immediate relief and an effort to stabilize daily life for children and families. Guided by Green's lived experience and community-minded philosophy, the organization continues to develop programs that prioritize dignity and continuity of care, small interventions that, over time, can support stronger, steadier households.
