Two-thirds of patients caught in NHS admin ‘doom loop’

  • A new study has revealed that two-thirds of patients in the UK experienced at least one administrative problem with the NHS over the past year.
  • These issues include patients having to chase test results, receiving appointment reminders after the date, and being given incorrect information, contributing to an “admin doom loop.”
  • The report, based on responses from 1,908 adults, indicates that public perception of NHS administration and communication has worsened since 2024, with less than half now rating it as good.
  • Significantly, 41 per cent of patients stated that these negative experiences make them less inclined to seek NHS care in the future.
  • Organisations behind the study, including the King's Fund and National Voices, are urging the government to make NHS administration a national priority, advocating for clearer standards and better integrated digital tools.
