Household chores are considered to be a source of arguments between couples. Not doing the vacuuming or getting in a strop over mops is a real issue - so much so, that people are said to want to end relationships because of it.
New research by method, a supplier of cleaning products has revealed that arguments over household chores pose big problems for millennial relationships. A whopping two thirds of this demographic (66%) admit they have thought about ending their partnership as a result of domestic disputes, followed by over half of Gen-Z (53%), a third of Gen-X (30%) and baby boomers (30%).
A staggering 70% of millennials believe quarrels about cleaning could lead to the complete breakdown of relationships. Gen-Z argue most frequently with their partner about chores, with a quarter (26%) arguing daily, and just under half (48%) arguing about cleaning woes on a weekly basis.
Specific household pet peeves include leaving the lights on around the home, which was noted as the biggest annoyance for both millennials (31%) and baby boomers (36%). Being forgetful with lights is in the top five bugbears for all generations, along with leaving the toilet seat up and not putting the dishes away.
The cleaning solution to household chore arguments
Cleaning experts method have come up with a unique solution. They have launched what they say is the UK’s first ever Clean Up Pre-nup.
It has been devised by method and leading legal firm Lawrence Stephens. This pre-nup is a co-signed agreement that encourages co-habitors to commit to a fair division of household tasks in order to restore harmony.
The company said: “Our Clean Up Pre-nup hopes to alleviate arguments so households can live together in bliss and find joy in keeping their home looking and smelling amazing."
