Two people were taken to hospital after being sprayed with an "unknown substance" at a pub.
Police are probing the incident which happened in North Shields town centre on Saturday night. Emergency services were called to Charlie's Bar, on Nile Street at just before 9pm.
Police say an altercation broke out during which several people were injured. Paramedics took two casualties to hospital.
The Chronicle understands a third person was also injured but did not need hospital treatment. Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Shortly before 9pm on Saturday, we received a report of a disturbance at a premises on Nile Street, North Shields. Following an altercation, it is believed several people were sprayed with an unknown substance.
"They later attended hospital for treatment. Enquiries are on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact police."
Paramedics were called to Charlie's Bar on Nile Road just before 9pm on Saturday, April 29 after a person was injured at the venue.
A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed that two people were taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington. And the service sent its Hazardous Area Response Team to the incident.
She said: "We received a call at 8.56pm on Saturday evening to a person injured at Charlie's Bar on Nile Road in North Shields. We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team, a Clinical Team Leader and two emergency ambulance crews.
"A second patient was also treated. Both patients were transported to Cramlington hospital for further treatment."
Charlie's Bar declined to comment when contacted.
