Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of five shootings in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Carlos Roberto Diaz, 18, and an unnamed 16-year-old juvenile are in custody, with Diaz believed to be in the U.S. illegally after crossing the Southern Border.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings described the crimes as brazen and a significant risk to the community. Diaz faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and attempted murder. The 16-year-old suspect is charged with first-degree murder, with additional charges expected.
The shootings occurred between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Metro and Steele Creek Divisions. Police apprehended the juvenile suspect after a traffic stop where a stolen firearm, shell casings, and an extended magazine were recovered. Detectives believe the 16-year-old had intentions of further violent criminal activity.
Both suspects admitted to carrying out the shootings after attending a party together. The FBI assisted in Diaz's arrest, and forensic lab testing has linked at least three of the incidents. Investigations are ongoing to determine further connections between the shootings.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are not seeking additional suspects at this time. The community is urged to remain vigilant as the investigation continues.
