Tragedy struck during a popular New Orleans second-line parade on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and nine injuries from two separate shooting incidents. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick provided details during a news conference following the incidents.
According to Kirkpatrick, the shootings took place at two different locations approximately 45 minutes apart. Despite the police department's awareness of the event's history of potential violence, additional officers were present to ensure public safety.
The first shooting occurred around 3:40 p.m. when shots were fired into the crowd from a car, resulting in eight individuals being struck. Kirkpatrick confirmed that two firearms were used in the incident, and all eight victims were transported to local hospitals and are currently alive.
Shortly after the initial shooting, another outbreak of gunfire took place on a bridge where two individuals were struck. Kirkpatrick noted that this incident occurred within the crowd as no vehicles were allowed on the bridge.
Tragically, one person lost their life during the second shooting, while another individual remains in critical condition. The police are investigating both incidents to determine if there is any connection between the two.
Kirkpatrick urged anyone with video footage or information regarding the shootings to contact the New Orleans Police Department or Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing investigation.
