Two people have died in a horror blaze engulfing a home in Nottingham, fire crews have confirmed.
The alarm was raised in Whittier Road, Nottingham, at around 12.45am with the blaze finally extinguished at around 2.30am.
Fire crews rushed to the terraced home to tackle the blaze, while nearby homes were also evacuated.
A cordon has been erected on the road where serious damage can be seen to one of the terraced homes.
In a statement Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a man and a woman were killed in the flames.
A spokesman added: “Sadly a man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
"The formal identification process is yet to take place and inquiries are ongoing.
“A joint fire and police investigation is taking place to establish the cause of the fire."
The fire service also confirmed crews from the London Road fire station will be in the area throughout the afternoon to offer reassurance to neighbours.
Following the incident, residents told Nottinghamshire Live how they were frightened.
Lisa Thomas, a resident on the road for around eight years, said: "It is frightening and really upsetting.
“I heard a lot of commotion and looked out my door and the house was engulfed in flames.
“I think [the emergency services] were here until about 4am.
“It's very sad."
John Loakes added: "I saw a lot of fire engines and wondered what was going off.
“The fire engines were struggling to get down the road. All that woke me up was a lot of commotion and talking outside.”
Several people shared their shock at the incident on social media, with one person describing it as "just the saddest news to wake up to."
Fellow neighbour Becca Whitehead, 29, said. "It is just so close to home.
"It is very sad and my condolences to the family. It is scary. It could have spread because those houses are conjoined."
Resident Amber Ward said: "My dad said there were flames coming from the roof.
"He came out about 1am and saw the house up in flames."
Crews from London Road, Carlton, West Bridgford, Arnold and Stapleford attended the blaze, which was reported to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service at 12.43am.
Firefighters remained at the scene to damp down the property once the flames were out.
Residents said the fire engines had problems reaching the home as cars were parked on both sides of the road.
