A 41-year-old man has been charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of a man in Manangatang, about 80km north-west of Swan Hill, last week.

Emergency services were called to a property on Wattle Street on Wednesday night following reports a man had been stabbed.

They found a 58-year-old man, who has since been identified as seasonal worker Dave Gaskell, with critical injuries.

Paramedics worked on Mr Gaskell but he died at the scene.

A 41-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were arrested in Albury this morning, almost five hours away from the crime scene, along the New South Wales-Victorian border.

The woman was released pending further enquiries.

The man will face Albury Magistrates Court tomorrow for an extradition hearing also charged with aggravated burglary and intentionally cause injury.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the pair was interviewed by police.

"We believe that we've located all persons that we need to at this point in time. We don't have anyone outstanding at this stage."

Inspector Thomas could not say whether the alleged weapon used during the incident had been recovered or what led police to the Albury area.

He said the investigation into what had occurred was ongoing, and he encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers or their local police.

"We're very conscious of the concern a crime like this can have on rural communities and it was our priority to ensure it was investigated and all attempts made to resolve this in a timely manner," he said.

A close friend of Mr Gaskell described him as "a good man who kept to himself and looked after the people who meant the most to him".
