Two new names emerge as Steve Cooper fights to hang on to Nottingham Forest job

With Steve Cooper’s job on the line, two new names have emerged as potential contenders to replace him, should Nottingham Forest make a change.

Monday night’s 4-0 thumping at Leicester City saw the Reds sink to the bottom of the Premier League table, leaving the head coach under significant pressure. His team have lost five in a row and have picked up four points from their first eight games.

Cooper could still be in charge for Monday night’s crunch clash at home to Aston Villa. It is understood a change is unlikely to be imminent.

The club considering their options does not necessarily mean the axe will fall. But the Welshman’s future remains uncertain, and other names continue to be linked with the job as he fights to stay at the helm.

Forest are said to “have contemplated” former Wolverhampton Wanderers managers Nuno Espirito Santo and Bruno Lage, according to The Athletic. The latter was sacked by the West Midlands side on Sunday, with his team having picked up just two more points than the Reds. He had been appointed Nuno’s replacement 16 months ago. Rafa Benitez and Sean Dyche have already been mentioned as possible candidates.

Cooper said of his future after the 4-0 defeat to Leicester City: “I’m not thinking about that. I understand where the question comes from, but I’m not thinking about my personal situation, apart from how I can be at my best every single day.

“The tougher and harder it gets, the harder I work and the more it means to me. Hopefully that’s what leadership is, standing up and being counted, trying to be a role model within the training ground.

“It’s a poor run of results. The stats, with chances and goals we are conceding, are not good. We are trying to address it.

“What I would say is, you didn’t see the team give up. I know it’s a group of players that care, even though we are new. Sometimes you can feel that it isn’t that, and I’m not sensing that at the moment.

“We’re just trying to put loads of layers of our work to become the team we want to be. We’re not that at the moment.”
