Two new Apple Pencils tipped – likely to offer one very specific upgrade each

Apple Pencil Pro.

Quick Summary

Apple could be working on two new Apple Pencil models, with both reportedly coming with battery upgrades.

This is a necessity rather than choice, it seems, as the batteries will need to be user-replaceable to adhere to new EU regulations.

Mondays aren’t usually a day most people would say they enjoy all that much, but they are always a good day for Apple rumours. Why? Because Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman publishes his Power On newsletter on Sundays, and it usually has a little bit of gossip on what we can expect from the Cupertino-based company over the next couple of months.

This week, the hot topic is the Apple Pencil – or Pencils, plural. That might not be quite as exciting as a folding iPhone, or speculation on what the next hero colour could be for the iPhone 18 Pro models, but the Apple Pencil is still a great accessory for anyone who likes drawing on an iPad.

What's the latest for Apple Pencil?

Gurman claims in his latest newsletter that Apple is working on two new Apple Pencil models. The two stylus options are expected to be announced next year alongside the next version of the iPad Pro so there’s still a little time to wait, but they are expected to succeed the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the Apple Pencil Pro.

According to Gurman, who has an uncannily good track record with Apple rumours, the new models will feature “new battery systems”. It’s thought this is to meet upcoming EU requirements aimed at making batteries user replaceable.

It is unclear whether how the new Apple Pencil models will meet the guidelines, but we suspect more details will leak over the upcoming months. After all, the regulations come into force in February next year.

Gurman didn’t offer any further details on what other features the new Apple Pencils might offer, but we would be surprised if there weren’t more improvements coming other than just a battery upgrade.

The Apple Pencil with USB-C arrived in November 2023, and it stands as the entry-level model, while the Apple Pencil Pro sits at the top of the Pencil range, launched in May 2024.

For now, nothing has been confirmed by Apple, but if you’re hoping for new Apple Pencil models, we hope this news made your Monday a little better.
