Two more Hunter residents die with COVID-19

Two people from the Hunter were among the 16 who died with COVID-19 across NSW in the 24 hours to 4pm on Wednesday.

The Hunter New England local health district recorded 2417 new cases in the latest reporting period, up from 2069 the previous day.

Hunter New England was again the NSW local health district with the most new daily cases, ahead of Northern Sydney and Western Sydney.

Two people aged in their 80s - a woman from Cessnock and a man from Lake Macquarie - died with the virus.

Elsewhere in the Hunter New England district, a woman in her 70s from Tamworth and a man in his 90s from Inverell also died with COVID-19.

There are 91 people with the virus in Hunter New England hospitals - up from 84 the previous day - including three patients who are receiving intensive care.

NSW recorded 17,447 new positive cases in the latest reporting period.

There are 1641 people in hospital across the state, including 69 in intensive care units.
