Crash investigators comb scene of car wrapped around power pole

TWO MEN have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after their car slammed into a power pole at Cardiff.

Emergency services remain at the scene on Munibung Road near Nelson Road after calls for help came in just before 8am on Friday.

Two men, believed to be aged in their 30s, were trapped in the car which was seen wrapped around a power pole.

The driver and his passenger were freed from the wreck by Fire and Rescue NSW crews before being treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and a medical helicopter team.

Both men were rushed to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

It's understood one man suffered a head injury and the other hurt his lower limbs, pelvis and chest.

A spokesperson for CareFlight, the medical helicopter at the scene, said one of the chopper's specialist doctors accompanied the passenger of the car to hospital in an ambulance.

They said he was in a critical condition.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the other man was in a serious conditions when he was taken to hospital on Friday morning.

Specialist investigators from the police force's Crash Investigation Unit were tasked and were combing the scene on Friday for clues in an effort to piece together how the sedan crashed into the pole.

Lake Macquarie police set up a crime scene and road blocks were in place, with diversions for traffic.

Minibung Road was closed at the Pendlebury Road traffic lights.

NSW Ambulance's Hunter Medical Retrieval Service road team was also tasked to the scene.

Police warned drivers in the area that traffic would be affected for a number of hours and urged people to avoid the area.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

TWO MEN are being treated for multiple injuries after a single-car crash at Cardiff.

Emergency services were called to Munibung Road, near Nelson Road, just before 8am on Friday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were treating two patients at the scene.

One man, believed to be aged in his 20s, suffered a head injury in the crash, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.

Another man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was being treated for chest, pelvic and lower limb injuries.

They had not been transported to hospital by about 8.45am but the NSW Ambulance spokesperson confirmed a helicopter had been tasked to the scene to help.

Traffic in the area is heavy while emergency services work, and anyone in the area should take care, and avoid that intersection if possible.

There are some road closures in place around the scene of the crash.

Police, firefighters, paramedics are on the scene, and the CareFlight chopper was also seen landing nearby on Friday morning.

Police are investigating the crash and have warned that traffic will be impacted and significantly delayed "for a number of hours".

"If possible, use an alternative route to avoid delays," a police spokesperson said.
