Two men are due to appear in court in connection with a suspected hit and run which left an elderly man seriously injured in Gateshead.
An investigation has been ongoing after it was reported that an 85-year-old man was struck by a car when he was crossing the road on Woodburn at around 7.30pm on February 25.
The elderly man suffered serious injuries as a result and the vehicle involved had already left the scene prior to emergency services arriving.
An investigation was launched to locate the vehicle and its occupants and following a range of enquiries, a number of suspects were arrested in connection with the investigation.
A 26-year-old man is now due to appear in court later this month to answer offences which include driving without a licence, no insurance use, careless driving without due care or attention and failing to stop after an accident.
A second man, aged 31, has also been served with a summons to attend court, on a date to be fixed, where he will respond to offences of permitting driving other than in accordance with a licence and no insurance use.
Sergeant Michael Parnaby, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “Ever since this incident, we have been determined to identify all parties involved and ensure effective justice is served.
“This was a serious collision that left a pensioner with a number of injuries. I would like to thank the victim and his family for their patience and cooperation throughout this investigation, as well as the public who came forward to assist us at every step.
“One man is now due to appear in court later this month in connection with this collision, while a second suspect has been served with a summons to appear in court on a future date to be fixed.
“I would ask that everyone refrains from any speculation that could jeopardise these live proceedings, both on social media and out in the wider community.”
Sgt Parnaby added: “Ensuring the safety of all our road users – including pedestrians – is paramount and we all have a responsibility to look after each other, and reduce the risk of serious injury or fatal collisions that destroy families.
“We will continue to do everything we can to identify those who flout the law and endanger the lives of others, and ensure they have their day in court.”
Three other suspects – a 23-year-old man and two 19-year-old men – were also arrested in connection with the incident and each remain under investigation.
