Two men have been charged with assaulting police officers during a scuffle at Manchester Airport in July. The incident sparked outrage after a video on social media showed an officer stomping on a man's head as he lay on the floor.
The Crown Prosecution Service has announced that no charges will be brought against any officers involved in the incident. The decision was made after a thorough review of all available evidence, including witness statements, video footage, and expert reports.
The altercation took place when police were called to break up a fight at Terminal Two of the airport on July 23. Three officers were assaulted, with one sustaining a broken nose. All three officers required hospital treatment.
Four individuals were arrested following the incident, and one officer was suspended from duty. Mohammed Amaaz, 20, has been charged with multiple offenses, including causing actual bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker. Muhammed Amaad, 25, has been charged with causing actual bodily harm.
The incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of police conduct in the U.K., with concerns raised about the use of excessive force against ethnic minorities. The Manchester officer involved in the video was initially suspended, but the suspension has since been lifted.
Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Stephen Watson expressed support for the decisions made by the Crown Prosecution Service. He welcomed the charges against the two men involved in the assaults and the decision not to pursue criminal action against serving officers.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is continuing its investigation into the incident at Manchester Airport.
