Two men accused of 'fairly brazen burglary' as cops seek missing Kia

Two men who allegedly stole a car in a "fairly brazen burglary" remain behind bars on remand, as police continue to search for a missing Kia.

Simon Gordon Oats, 53, and co-accused Jessie Raymond Gould, 33, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

They are yet to enter pleas to multiple charges including joint commission aggravated burglary, joint commission taking a motor vehicle without consent, joint commission obtain financial advantage by deception, and joint commission minor theft.

Police allege about 5.15am on Tuesday, Gould and Oats were captured on CCTV trying to access vehicles in the underground carpark of a Dickson apartment complex.

A short time later, they allegedly broke into a blue Kia Cerato, and took off with it.

As they left the carpark, a man tried to position himself in front of the Kia to prevent them from leaving.

However Gould and Oats allegedly accelerated towards him and swerved, before leaving.

About 6.30am, the owner of the Kia Cerato contacted police to report the allegedly stolen car.

That afternoon, police in Ainslie allegedly saw the two accused burglars wearing the same clothing as pictured in CCTV footage of the theft.

Officers allegedly found stolen items on Gould and Oats including numerous bank cards and airpods. They were then arrested.

On Wednesday, Oats was denied bail with magistrate James Lawton calling the allegations "a fairly brazen burglary".

A prosecutor had argued the allegedly stolen car had not been found, and "police have concerns he will find and damage the vehicle if released".

Gould did not apply for bail.

Both men were remanded in custody and are set to return to court next month.

Police are appealing to the Canberra community for assistance in locating the blue Kia Cerato sedan, bearing ACT registration YMH40L. The vehicle is suspected to be in the vicinity of Ainslie, Braddon, or the City.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the Kia is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference number 7880677.
