On Friday, two crew members of the Holland America Line tragically lost their lives while the Nieuw Amsterdam ship was docked in the Bahamas. The company confirmed that the deaths occurred following an incident in an engineering space on board the ship at Half Moon Cay. The cause of death is currently under investigation, and reports of a shipboard fire were deemed inaccurate by the company.
Holland America Line expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased crew members. The company emphasized that the safety, security, and welfare of all guests and crew remain their top priority. Counseling services are being offered to team members affected by the tragedy.
The Nieuw Amsterdam is currently on a seven-night cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 16. This unfortunate event follows another recent incident where a 27-year-old Florida woman was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead in her cruise ship cabin while en route to the Bahamas.
Medical personnel aboard the ship attempted to revive the woman through CPR, but unfortunately, she did not show any vital signs. Subsequently, police discovered and seized a quantity of suspected cocaine from the cabin during their investigation. A 32-year-old Florida man was arrested in connection with the incident.
