Two Gateshead women robbed a frail pensioner in a churchyard

A frail pensioner was left traumatised when two women robbed him in a churchyard.

The 74-year-old said he had gone into the grounds of the church in Gateshead to look at ornaments when he encountered Kerrie O'Neil and Lisa Palmer.

A court heard O'Neil, who has 112 previous convictions, used force to steal £100 from the pensioner, while Palmer joined in near the end.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the victim had been on Gateshead High Street on July 17 last year.

Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw said: "He is not sure how it happened but he found himself in a churchyard. He believes he went to see the ornaments."

Part of the offence at St Joseph's Church was caught on CCTV, with the victim, who had visible mobility issues, trying to grab one of the women to get his wallet back.

A woman who was shopping in the area also witnessed what was happening.

Mr Wardlaw said: "She became aware of the complainant shouting from St Joseph's 'get off me, give my my wallet'.

"She said both females were grabbing at him, pulling him and the man was trying to push them off.

"One of the females was trying to hold his arms back and the second female was grabbing at his pockets.

"She then saw the man grab at O'Neil and pulled her as he tried to get his wallet back and Palmer was also involved in restraining him."

O'Neil and Palmer were identified from the good quality CCTV and arrested later that day.

Referring to a victim impact statement, Mr Wardlaw said: "This has had a significant effect on his confidence and day to day life.

"He was targeted due to his age and vulnerability."

O'Neil, 34, of Redheugh Court, Teams, Gateshead and Palmer, 29, of Milton Road, Whickham, Gateshead, both admitted robbery.

Recorder Richard Wright QC jailed O'Neil for 30 months and sentenced Palmer, who has five previous convictions, to 20 months suspended for two years with rehabilitation.

The judge said: "The two of you robbed, together, an elderly and frail man just off Gateshead High Street in the grounds of a church.

"It's quite obvious from the CCTV footage he was particularly vulnerable because of his significantly reduced mobility. That can be clearly seen.

"There was tussling but not serious violence. You easily overpowered an elderly and frail man."

Richard Herrmann, O'Neil, said the offence was "opportunistic" and not planned and that the pensioner was in the "wrong place at the wrong time".

He added that she is remorseful for the effect it's had on the victim.

Mr Herrmann said: "She has led a tragic life.

"She's been addicted to the most damaging of drugs and is now on a methadone programme.

"She has resorted to working in the sex industry."

Rachel Hedworth, for Palmer, said she was a "minor player" in the offence.
