Two Doors Down Christmas special hailed a tearjerker as fans call it the best episode ever

Once the turkey has been scoffed and the prosecco has been quaffed the attention turns to festive TV.

While the nation had the usual festive soaps to look forward to, Christmas specials were also a welcome addition for viewers.

One surprise festive episode came from beloved Scots sitcom Two Doors Down.

The cast swapped Latimer Crescent for a town centre coffee shop called Tosca Coffee - a wee anagram of 'Costa' for the eagle-eyed viewers.

Arabella Weir and Alex Norton returned to play Beth and Eric. Christine (Elaine C Smith) with loving son Ian (Jamie Quinn) and his wide-eyed fiancé Gordon (Kieran Hodgson) appearing, while ever-positive Michelle (Joy McAvoy) and partner Alan (Graeme Stevely) were joined by Colin, played by Jonathan Watson, and his new partner Anne Marie (Siobhan Redmond).

The story centres around Elaine C Smith's character Christine (BBC Studios / Robert Pereira Hind)

Siobhan Redmond entered the show following the shock news that Colin's wife, Cathy, played by Doon Mackichan, had left the show.

The festive show on BBC One was still packed with the usual one-liners from Elaine C Smith but had a poignant edge to it.

Ayrshire actor Grado, who plays Alan, hinted that the episode was a tearjerker.

One viewer said on Twitter: "Possibly one of the best episodes of Two Doors Down. Well done to all involved."

Another said: "Hilarious as ever, but oh my goodness Elaine C Smith played an absolute blinder in this episode. Christine is the heart of this show, and that was really emotional in the best possible way."

Two Doors Down Christmas special aired on Friday, December 23 but is available to watch on iPlayer.
