Authorities in Orlando, Florida, are investigating a shooting incident that left two people dead and six others injured. The Orlando Police Chief, Eric Smith, provided details during a press briefing following the early morning incident.
According to Chief Smith, the shooting occurred at around 1:07 a.m. in the vicinity of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue. A second report of shots fired was received shortly after in the area south of Washington Street on Orange Avenue.
Chief Smith confirmed that a total of eight victims were involved, with ages ranging from 19 to 39. Six of the victims were transported to receive medical treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old named Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, has been taken into custody. Chief Smith mentioned that the suspect had a prior arrest in 2023 for grand theft.
During the press briefing, Chief Smith emphasized that no shots were fired by law enforcement officers during the incident. He presented video footage showing the chaotic scene as crowds fled after the shootings. Additionally, body camera footage was shown depicting an officer successfully apprehending the suspect.
