Two-day warning to anyone with an Amazon Prime account ahead of price hike

Millions of Amazon customers have just days left before Prime subscription prices rise by up to £16 a year. The new prices will be implemented from September 15 for new subscribers, or on the date of your next renewal.

Monthly subscribers will see their Prime membership increase from £7.99 a month, to £8.99 a month, the Mirror reports . Meanwhile, the annual membership will increase from £79 a year, to £95.

Previously, paying annually would work out at £6.58 a month, but now, it will equate to £7.91. This means it's still the better option in terms of costs in the long run - but only if you can afford to pay the lump sum.

Customers are quickly running out of time to cancel their subscriptions if they’re not happy with the price rise, which Amazon has blamed on "increased inflation and operating costs".

Although businesses are not exempt from soaring inflation rates, it comes at a time when families continue to struggle against the cost of living crisis.

A spokeswoman for Amazon said: "Prime offers the best of shopping and entertainment, and continues to improve each year.

"We have increased the number of products available with fast, unlimited Prime delivery, recently added ultra-fast fresh grocery delivery, and have significantly expanded our high-quality digital entertainment, including TV, movies, music, games, and books.

"With increased inflation and operating costs in the UK continuing to rise, we will change the price of Prime."

Amazon Prime offers free next-day delivery on thousands of items, along with TV and movie streaming and live sport events. However, not all its content is free. You have to pay to rent some shows and films - meaning an extra cost on top of your monthly or annual fee.

How do I cancel Amazon Prime?

If you're already signed up to Amazon Prime and you're not happy about the price increases, you can cancel for free. But before you do this, take a look and see if you actually make use of Amazon Prime - and therefore if it is worth the cost.

Prime members can also share certain benefits with someone else in their home - so you might be able to save costs that way if someone else you live with already pays for Prime.

Paying annually rather than monthly is also cheaper, if you're set on keeping Prime.

If you do think you can do without Amazon and you'd like to cancel your subscription, you might be eligible for a full refund if you haven't used any Prime services.

On the Amazon website, it says those who are part-way through their deal and who have used Prime for delivery only might be able to get a partial refund.
