Two children were rushed to hospital after the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry on a road in the Scottish Highlands.
Emergency services were called to the A87, between Kyle of Lochalsh and Balmacara east of Skye, at around 3.50pm on Thursday June 1 following reports of a smash involving a Peugeot 308 hatchback and a lorry. The two youngsters travelling in the car, aged six and 10, were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with minor injuries.
The 37-year-old male driver of the Peugeot was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with serious injuries, where their current condition is unknown. Police say the 49-year-old male driver of the lorry also sustained "minor injuries".
Images from the scene show investigators in high-visibility jackets assessing the crash scene on Thursday afternoon. The road is littered with debris and the white and orange lorry is seen stopped across the road at an angle.
The wreckage of the grey Peugeot hatchback is almost unrecognisable. Road policing officers closed the road for around nine hours to allow investigations to take place; images shared on social media by motorists showed queues of traffic as vehicles were diverted around the crash site.
Officers are now appealing for information as their enquiries into the serious collision continue.
Sergeant Ally MacKay, from the Dingwall road policing unit, said: “As we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, we ask anyone who was on that stretch of road and either witnessed the crash or either of the vehicles beforehand to please contact police.
“We are also keen to hear from any motorists who may have potential dashcam footage. If you have any information, please contact police on 101, quoting incident 2680 of 1 June, 2023.”
