Two Canadian entrepreneurs have showed that thousands of discarded plastic bottles could be turned into something far more useful than clothing, carpets or sleeping bags. In Meteghan, Nova Scotia, JD Composites has unveiled a concept home made using material derived from more than 612,000 recycled plastic bottles, offering a striking example of how recycled plastic could find a new purpose in construction, according to Invest Nova Scotia.
One of the project’s most striking features was the exceptional strength of its panels. During wind testing, a single 8-by-8-foot panel reportedly withstood winds reaching 326 mph (524 km/h) — nearly twice the wind speeds associated with a Category 5 hurricane. The test underscored the remarkable durability and structural potential of the recycled-PET composite material.

How do 612,000 plastic bottles become a house?
The process began with PET foam made from recycled plastic bottles. Joel German, co-owner of JD Composites, explained: “We work with a company out of Ontario, Armacell, to source pre-made panels. Armacell creates PET foam from recycled bottles by mulching them up and then melting them down to make small beads.”
The recycled material then goes through an extrusion process, which gives the foam its required density depending on how it will be used.
“From there it goes through an extruding process that gives it its density depending on its secondary application- like aerospace, commercial windmills, or in this case walls for a home”, German said.
The finished panels don't necessarily look like recycled plastic. In fact, someone driving past the home might have no idea that its walls began life as discarded bottles.
Canadian brothers have bigger plans than one house
The Nova Scotia project isn't simply about building another custom home. JD Composites says its focus is on applications where the material can be produced and used at scale, including smaller dwellings, shelters, sheds, offices and sleeping barracks.
