In a TikTok tale that’s making waves, two friends found themselves kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops. Yes, you read that right — crop tops!
The drama unfolded on October 4 when Teresa and her friend Tara were traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans to celebrate a birthday.
After settling into their seats, they were approached by a male flight attendant who alledgedly demanded they “cover up”. You truly can’t make this up.
Tara recounted the experience on social media, stating, “We were harassed by a male flight attendant who told us to ‘cover up’ because we were wearing crop tops.”
Initially, she complied and put her cardigan back on, but with the plane feeling really “hot” (seriously, why are planes like saunas these days), she had to take it off again. When the attendant returned, he allegedly insisted, “Put your coat on, I won’t ask you another time.” Yikes!
Things escalated quickly. When Tara asked to see the airline’s dress code, the attendant reportedly threatened, “You’ll see what’s going to happen!”
And that they did. Despite being on the runway, the plane turned around to drop them back at the gate. A female supervisor arrived and insisted they leave, despite other passengers jumping to their defense.
“Other passengers joined in and tried defending us, but ultimately, a supervisor talked to us and told [us] either we would leave the flight or she would bring [in] the police,” Teresa said per News.com.au.
One even chimed in that if crop tops were inappropriate, then she should be kicked off too!
After being escorted off, Tara learned that Spirit Airlines doesn’t offer refunds or rebooking for those booted from flights. She ended up paying nearly AU$1480 for a last-minute Delta ticket and waiting around for hours at the airport. “We felt like criminals,” she said.
The internet has quickly come to the girls’ defence, expressing their disappointment with Spirit Airlines.
“SpiritAirlines Please reconsider this policy. It’s wildly out-of-date. In 2024, we shouldn’t be policing women’s bodies,” commented one TikToker.
“Feels like just more evidence that we’re moving backwards in this country when it comes to women’s rights. Now men can kick women off planes bc they don’t agree w/the way she’s dressed?” said another.
Spirit Airlines stated they are investigating the incident and reminded everyone of their vague dress code policy. So basically they gave us nothing.
