Many Twitter users reported on Tuesday (June 27) that their Twitter accounts are receiving spam warnings, despite seemingly not having broken any rules.
Users reported logging into the social media platform to see the message: “Your account appears to be in violation of Twitter’s spam policy. Your ability to follow, like, and retweet will be limited for the following period of time: 3 days and 0 hours.”
Twitter does have spam rules in place, but it appeared as though more users than usual were receiving the notifications out of the blue.
It is unclear whether the messages have been sent out in error, as Twitter has not responded to this at the time of writing, however, #Spam has been trending on Twitter, so it’s safe to say that the platform will catch on soon enough.
The Standard was unable to replicate the issue, and this writer had no issues logging in on Tuesday.
However many users did, and their reactions were very critical of the platform’s owners.
One user tweeted: “No, Twitter. I don’t spam. Your automated systems are in error. I don’t post ads or scam people for money.
“Your system needs to be adjusted. I’m being punished for a crime I didn’t commit.”

What are Twitter’s rules on spam?
Twitter has very clear rules of what it deems to be spam, and outside of today’s reported errors, there have been many clear cases where users have fallen foul of the rules.
Some rules include:
“You may not use Twitter’s services in a manner intended to artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience or platform manipulation defenses on Twitter.”
“You can’t mass-register Twitter accounts or use automation to create Twitter accounts.”
“You can’t artificially inflate your own or others’ followers or engagement.”
