The Chicago Bears defeated the Houston Texans 23-20 to improve to 2-1 on the season. But it wasn’t an encouraging win, at least when it comes to the development of quarterback Justin Fields.
Fields had a brutal showing against a 26th-ranked Texans secondary. He completed 8-of-17 passes for 106 yards with two interceptions and two fumbles for a 27.7 passer rating.
It’s alarming considering how out of sorts Fields has looked for two consecutive weeks, where he’s made some poor decisions, held onto the ball for too long and overall regressed since last season.
But is it time to panic about Fields after 13 starts?
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Fields’ rough performance against the Texans on Sunday:
I don’t honestly know how you can’t be concerned about Justin Fields at this point.
In almost every imaginable way, he has regressed. That doesn’t mean the book is fully written on him but this has been about as worst case of a scenario to start the season that exists. #Bears

Your future franchise QB shouldn't be playing this poorly against the Houston goddamn Texans.
No excuses here. Justin Fields has been terrible today. #Bears

I’m gonna say it – Justin Fields has not looked good at all this year
Looks like he’s taken a big step back as a passer, actually
— Jeremy Layton (@JeremyLayt0n) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields is regressing right now and it needs to stop.

Justin Fields was absolutely dominant at OSU. One of the best college QBs I've ever seen. I was confident he'd become a star.
There's still time, but he's thrown some absolute stinkers in the NFL. The weapons aren't great, but at a certain point, he has to be held accountable.
— Jacob Infante (@jacobinfante24) September 25, 2022
To be 2-1 with a QB that has struggled the way Justin Fields has should be a sign that things can get much better, not worse.

Justin Fields is broken right now.
The question now is whether Luke Getsy can fix him.
— Lorin Cox (@CoxSports1) September 25, 2022
So far through 3 games, I’m surprised at how uncomfortable #Bears Justin Fields looks in the pocket. Feels like there’s been very few dropbacks where he’s looked comfortable and thrown on time.
Hopefully he just needs more time in the offense (or to not step on his RB’s foot)
— Robert Schmitz (@robertkschmitz) September 25, 2022
On that series — three straight runs — #Bears OC Luke Getsy just told you he doesn't trust Justin Fields yet either.
— David Haugh (@DavidHaugh) September 25, 2022
This passing offense looks bad and I hate to say it, Justin Fields has been the biggest reason why. Just never looks comfortable and looks hesitant to throw again. #DaBears
— Rob Schwarz Jr. (@ChiRuxinBGO) September 25, 2022
That was a pathetic game by Justin Fields. Clearly his worse game as a pro. He has to be better. Im not jumping ship but he can’t have another game like that ever again.
He’s regressed tremendously since the 49ers game.
— EJ (@itsmine49) September 25, 2022
The Bears love Justin Fields. They loved him all off-season. But he’s playing the position at a terrible level right now. https://t.co/vN0sBkNWgn
— DaBearsBlog (@dabearsblog) September 25, 2022
Just when you start getting worried about Justin Fields, he makes a throw like that. And I just don’t understand why it can’t happen more often? Or with more consistency?
— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields simply has to be better.
— The Irish Bears Show (@IrishBearsShow) September 25, 2022
The Bears' supporting cast is poor.
Justin Fields has made some very bad decisions/throws.
Both can be true. Hope today is the bottom for him because it's been really bad
— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) September 25, 2022
Me celebrating a #Bears win knowing Justin Fields looked terrible again and it was against Lovie Smith and the Texans. #BearDown pic.twitter.com/VReHJ1C2g4

People want to know why the Bears don't let Justin Fields throw more….
No excuses on matchup or elements today.
— Joe Ostrowski (@JoeOstrowski) September 25, 2022
I don't like what Justin Fields has done throwing the ball over the middle so far this season. It's been bad decisions followed by bad throws.#Bears
— Flo Ottis (@flo_ottis) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields needs lots of starts and reps to possibly become a good NFL QB. Have to let it play out.
The Bears fans understandably struggle to have patience. This is the source of tension, for weeks and weeks to come.— M@ (@MattSpiegel670) September 25, 2022
I think the Bears are asking Justin Fields to make a five course meal with groceries from the dollar store.
— Ross Read (@RossRead) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields is playing worse than he did last year. He's playing like he doesn't belong in the NFL and its disheartening
— 79th & Halas Podcast (@79thAndHalas) September 25, 2022
The only thing that really matters about this Bears season is finding out if Justin Fields is any good. If he's not, that's okay, this front office didn't draft him anyway. But running a 1970s ass offense and treating him with kid gloves is not the move. Let him throw it!
— Ricky O'Donnell (@SBN_Ricky) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields is playing with very little confidence because his coaching staff hasn’t instilled it in him.
— Ross Read (@RossRead) September 25, 2022
The Bears had to run for darn near 300 yards against the Texans today in order to overcome bad QB play from Justin Fields and escape with a win thanks to a late INT by Roquan Smith.
That’s absolutely concerning and I, for one, love Fields.
— Ryan Heckman (@TheRyanHeckman) September 25, 2022
Right now, I’m doubling down:
Justin Fields is THAT guy. He’s a franchise QB. He’ll be an all pro. He’ll be our first 4,000 yard QB. He will lead us to a Super Bowl. I believe and I got QB1’s back.
— CJ Bear Down! Moore (@CJ_Chi6142) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields has looked really sloppy in the pocket. How can you expect consistency when you're not consistent with your decision-making, footwork, arm angles etc.
— Flo Ottis (@flo_ottis) September 25, 2022
Justin Fields is the guy until he’s not the guy. Stop asking
