Despite recent rumblings about artificial intelligence and TikTok, Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google still reigns supreme when it comes to search functions. The site has deservedly become a synonym for an online search, and it's hard to imagine anything on the internet functioning without it.
But according to a report by Platformer, Twitter is in danger of losing some key Google features thanks to Elon Musk's dramatic cost-cutting. The company reportedly signed a multi-year deal with Google, which provides services "related to fighting spam, removing child sexual abuse material, and protecting accounts, among other things."

Twitter's contract with Google is reportedly up for renewal this month, and under Musk's leadership, the company is trying to renegotiate the terms -- and has refused to pay the bill in the meantime. A source for Platformer has said that behind the scenes, Twitter is scrambling to separate services from Google Cloud.
If the contract dissolves, Twitter could no longer appear in Google search results. The loss of Google could also result in a spike in unwanted content, including harassment, sexual abuse, and spam bots.
Musk has led Twitter in a massive wave of cost-cutting measures since purchasing the social media platform in the fall of 2022. Large layoffs reduced the company from 7,500 employees to less than 2,000, while the company has tried to incentivize users to pay for the infamous Blue Check authorization.
At the time of this writing, neither Google nor Twitter has responded to requests for comment.
