A mum has been found dead in her New York apartment by her twin daughters who came into her room to find her bloody and unconscious in her bedroom.
Theresa Gregg's 12-year-old twins called 911 after finding the 37-year-old lifeless in her room at the family's Brooklyn home on Saturday morning, May 13.
Police said the mum, who was a special officer with the city's Department of Homeless Services, had been stabbed in the neck and body.
Blood had poured off the mattress and formed a pool on the bedroom floor.
Authorities said Theresa appears to have been killed during a domestic dispute at the home on Bedford Avenue, between South Third and South Fourth Streets in the Williamsburg area.
Officers from the NYPD's 90th Precinct responded to the 911 call where they discovered Theresa's body.
EMS units arrived at the scene and pronounced Theresa dead at the scene in the fourth floor apartment.
It's not clear how long her body had been there before it was discovered.
Theresa's body was transferred to the Medical Examiner's officer for an autopsy to be carried out to determine her cause of death.
Theresa had a boyfriend and the couple used to argue frequently, neighbours told the New York Post.
"I could hear them fighting, both of them yelling," said one neighbour who wished to remain anonymous.
"They fight a lot. You can hear it pretty clear."
The neighbour said Theresa had lived in the apartment for around six years with her daughters.
It hasn't been made clear if police are looking to speak to Theresa's partner, who has not yet been identified.
Theresa was a homeless services officer, who had held a special officer position at New York City's Department of Homeless Services, according to public records.
Neighbours, still reeling from shock, spoke to local news outlets on Sunday.
Johanna Hidalgo, who lived downstairs, remembered how kind and police Theresa's daughters were whenever she encountered them.
"I was so shocked yesterday," she said. "Her daughters are so sweet - every morning they say good morning, they're smiling. So beautiful, so respectful.
"They were in middle school, they're twins so they would walk to school with their friends... those girls were so sweet."
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeless Services said: "This is an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy.
"We are ever-grateful for Officer Gregg's invaluable contributions and tireless dedication to serving and supporting vulnerable New Yorkers."
