Best TV shows on TV tonight
The Gallows Pole, 9 pm, BBC One
Wages are falling, jobs are disappearing and families are struggling to make ends meet in this powerful new drama from writer and director Shane Meadows. However, this is no contemporary tale, but one set in 1760s Yorkshire! Based on the real story of the Cragg Vale Coiners, a band of rural weavers who started counterfeiting gold coins when the Industrial Revolution destroyed their livelihoods, it’s an absorbing chapter from working class history.
Michael Socha, Thomas Turgoose and former Downton Abbey maid Sophie McShera star as the Hartleys, with some promising new talent also on show.
★★★★ SMA
It’s the last ever episode of this much-loved series today – or at least the last for the foreseeable future. Viewers fell hard for the comedy drama when it was first released, but then a show with the mantra ‘Believe’ at its heart was always going to go down well in the summer of 2020 when the world was in the grip of a pandemic.
After winning an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for each of its first two seasons, this final one has had a mixed reception, but fans are so invested in Ted (Jason Sudeikis), Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and co that, while sad that it’s drawing to a close, they want to see if they get a happy ending.

The Great British Sewing Bee, 9 pm, BBC One
Week two sees the 11 contestants take on Travel Week. Their first task is to create a durable rucksack with a rolled top, a metal clasp and adjustable straps. The stitchers soon discover some tricky traps – getting the sliders to work, for one! As a keen cyclist, Tony R reveals he’s made bags before but Gillie’s choice of flimsy fabric soon causes issues: ‘I’m no Crocodile Dundee!’ she sighs.
Next is the Transformation Challenge – can the tailors create innovative waterproofs from plastic windbreaks? Finally, the Made to Measure task is swimwear. With slippery Lycra to work with and the potential for saggy crotches, who will make a splash and who will belly-flop?

Bad Sisters, Apple TV+
Winner of best Drama at the TV BAFTAs recently, Sharon Horgan’s brilliant Dublin-set black-comedy thriller is a wild ride. Based on the Belgian series Clan, it follows the convoluted attempts of the Garvey sisters to get rid of their hated brother-in-law (Claes Bang, an excellent TV villain). Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff (in a BAFTA-winning role), Sarah Greene, Eve Hewson and Eva Birthistle play the sisters, and Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack also star. Filming for a second series is due to begin in the autumn.
