Best TV shows on TV tonight

Who Do You Think You Are?, 9 pm, BBC One

Twin doctors and TV presenters Chris and Xand van Tulleken have always known about their Dutch heritage – and the pair have even inherited the title of Jonkheer, which is the equivalent of being a baron! In this week’s Who Do You Think You Are? episode, Chris and Xand’s discoveries reveal some swashbuckling stories of Dutch naval battles and a heart-warming tale of love against the odds.

But their ancestry isn’t all about pride and nobility, when they also unearth a deeply troubling story about their five-times-great-grandfather, Ambrosius Tulleken, relating to his dealings in the former Dutch colony of Demerara….

Season three – split into two, with five episodes released today, and three on 27 July – finds monster-hunting hero Geralt (Henry Cavill) joining forces with Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) to protect Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) from the monsters, mages and monarchs plotting to capture her. But when Yennefer shows Ciri how to harness her powers and leads her and Geralt to the fortress of Aretuza, the trio become cornered by dark magic… Hugh Skinner joins the cast as King Vizimir’s playboy brother Prince Radovid, while Cavill bows out this season, leaving Liam Hemsworth to take over as Geralt.

Secrets of the Bay City Rollers, 9 pm, ITV1

Known for their clean-cut image and tartan trousers, Scottish teen heart-throbs the Bay City Rollers took the world by storm in the 1970s with hits including Bye Bye Baby and Shang-a-Lang. But, as Nicky Campbell uncovers in this one-off documentary, their success was marred by rumours of sexual abuse involving their manager Tam Paton. The most heartbreaking story concerns the Rollers’ lead singer Les McKeown, who died in 2021 after a lifetime of drug addiction following revelations that he was sexually abused, and Nicky talks to his widow Peko and son Jubei, who reveal the devastating truth behind the demons that haunted him…

Britain's Best Beach Huts, 8 pm, C4

Jay Blades heads to the seaside for a series that sees him join interior design expert Laura Jackson as they look around some of the nation’s top coastal hideaways, from the quirky to the ingenious. The series starts with them exploring five traditional huts, including a 1940s-inspired bolthole, a wedding venue and a bespoke shack in Norfolk made from driftwood. Jay also gives us the low-down on the beach hut’s fascinating history, which dates back to Victorian times when day trippers began erecting huge tents where they could change into swimwear.

And Just Like That season 2, Sky Comedy

The series follows best friends Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda in their 50s. Now older and wiser, they're all embarking on new adventures.

In season 1, Carrie's husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth) died of a heart attack in the first episode, setting Carrie on a collision course with life as a widow. Slowly but surely she's bouncing back and rediscovering herself, and trying to find love again.

The first two episodes dropped on Thursday, June 22 with episodes airing weekly.

Best film on TV tonight

Waves, BBC iPlayer

A movie about a domineering, competitive father (This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown) trying to keep his teenage children – Kelvin Harrison Jr (soon to be seen as Martin Luther King Jr in Genius) and Taylor Russell – on the straight and narrow is transformed by writer-director Trey Edward Shults into a stunning cinematic work of power and beauty. Set in sunny, tropical Florida, this uses vibrant colour to incredible effect, combined with camerawork that is nothing short of masterful, with a story’s that an emotional deep dive, too, covering pain, loss, love and everything in between. You emerge the other side wrung out but thoroughly enriched.
