A Woman of Substance

9pm, Channel 4
Forty years after the Emmy-nominated adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s 1979 novel, here’s another wonderful (and horny) retelling of the revenge tale. In the 70s, “richest woman in the world” Emma Harte (Brenda Blethyn) reflects on her life from her New York penthouse. Her story starts at the turn of the 20th century in Yorkshire, where she worked as a maid for a wealthy family. When her mother instructs Emma to chase her dreams from her deathbed, she makes plans to never be poor again. But wrong turns are always moments away … Jessica Reynolds plays younger Emma and is joined by an equally brilliant cast including Emmett J Scanlan and Lenny Rush. Hollie Richardson

Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time

8pm, Channel 5
Another fascinating tour around the oldest hospital in Britain that’s still on its original site. Alice traces Barts’ state-of-the-art, robot-arm-operated pharmacy all the way back to the Great Plague of 1665, when it was a humble apothecary’s shop. And what can plastic surgery techniques developed to treat first world war soldiers offer patients today? Ellen E Jones

Ambulance

9pm, BBC One
There’s a long night ahead for Yorkshire’s ambulance service. As frontline crew members dodge punches from one patient, and rush to the aid of an elderly woman who is impaled on her own walking frame, call handler Abi has a different challenge: an abusive 999 caller is blocking the lines. EEJ

Hostage

9pm, BBC Two

The second episode of this grim but gripping documentary series explores the kidnapping in Syria of journalists John Cantlie and James Foley. This time, ransom demands are issued (and ignored on principle by the authorities) while the Isis captives begin to lose hope. Contributors include former prime minister David Cameron and former jihadist Hamza Parvez. Phil Harrison

The Stolen Girl

9pm, ITV1
“I know what I’m about to say might sound strange, but you need to know: I’m your mummy.” While Rebecca attempts to console the kidnapped Lucia at their French farmhouse hideout, back home Fred hands himself in to the police and a nosy neighbour threatens to blow Rebecca’s cover. Ali Catterall

We Might Regret This

10pm, BBC Two
The groundbreaking comedy continues with benefits assessor Susan (guest star Lolly Adefope) evaluating Freya’s financial needs. She also delivers some bad news: if Freya goes ahead with her marriage to Abe, her funding will be cut. Next week’s finale is the wedding episode, but with so many growing doubts, will it go ahead? Film choices

Zootropolis 2 (Jared Bush, Byron Howard, 2025), Disney+

Whether it’s called Zootopia 2 or Zoomania 2 (hello Germany), the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time is a chip off the old block. Back come police detective duo Judy Hopps, a rabbit (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin), and Nick Wilde, a red fox (Jason Bateman), as they seek a snake (Ke Huy Quan) who may be connected to a smuggling operation. But snakes haven’t been seen in the city for years … A colourful comedy action adventure that will appeal mostly to the younger generation. Simon Wardell
