TV Tokyo and GagaOOLala are set to release a live-action drama series titled 'At 25.00 in Akasaka' this month, falling under the popular Boys Love (BL) genre. The series, based on a manga by Natsuno Hiroko, has garnered significant attention, with over 1.2 million copies of the comic sold. The storyline delves into the romantic relationship between a well-known actor and a budding talent, both cast as leads in a BL drama that has captured the hearts of audiences globally.
The lead roles in the series are portrayed by Niihara Taisuke and Komagine Kiita. The BL genre, which has origins contested among Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, has evolved into a substantial cultural phenomenon in East Asia. In 2020, the BL market in Japan was valued at $1.85 million, while Thai BL content received foreign investments totaling $111 million in 2021.
TV Tokyo and GagaOOLala revealed that a total of 220 BL and Girl's Love (GL) shows were produced in Asia in 2022, with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand emerging as key content hubs. These countries are contributing to a genre that challenges stereotypes and promotes global acceptance of LGBTQ individuals through compelling storytelling.
Taiwan's commitment to supporting international co-productions, with a focus on queer content as part of its soft power strategy, is evident through a significant $300 million investment from its National Development Fund. Jay Lin, the founder and CEO of GagaOOLala, expressed excitement about the collaboration, envisioning 'At 25:00 in Akasaka' as the first of many impactful ventures between the two companies.
The series is scheduled for a major launch event in Tokyo on April 15, with the premiere set for April 18. GagaOOLala will exclusively stream the show globally, outside of Japan, releasing new episodes weekly on Thursdays. Natsuno, the creator of the original manga, shared her delight in seeing her work come to life through the collaborative efforts of the production team and cast, expressing hope that the reimagined adaptation will bring joy to many viewers.
