Turkey warning as Foreign Office releases new travel advice for UK visitors

The Foreign Office has issued a warning to people travelling from the UK to Turkey for weight loss treatments.

Many people visit Turkey to undergo cosmetic surgery, dental procedures and cardiac surgery. However, the standard of some medical facilities has caused the UK government concern.

Since January 2019, 22 British nationals have died in Turkey following medical procedures. There are also reports of an outbreak of botulism cases linked to weight loss treatments performed in Istanbul and Izmir.

Botulism is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These toxins attack the nervous system and cause paralysis.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said: "British nationals considering undertaking medical treatment in Turkey should carry out their own research; it is unwise to rely upon private companies that have a financial interest in arranging your medical treatment abroad.

"If you are travelling to Turkey to undertake a medical procedure we would advise you to refer to the HealthTurkiye portal website for medical providers who are approved by the Ministry of Health."

It's recommended that people considering medical treatment in Turkey consult their doctor or dentist in the UK before travelling abroad.
