TUI flight circles over Liverpool for nearly three hours after emergency signal

A TUI flight has been spotted circling over Merseyside for nearly three hours after sending an emergency squawk.

TUI BY216 flight was due to fly from Manchester to Cape Verde at 9.33am. However, upon take off at 10.30am the plane started to circle around the airport.

It proceeded to then fly over the Peak District National Park, Wrexham and Merseyside for two hours and 30 minutes before returning to Manchester Airport.

Aviation experts reported on Twitter that the BY216 flight had given a code 7700, which means a 'general emergency'. User @MonksLeaks said: "Flight BY216 with aircraft Boeing 767-38A has landed after full emergency with one engine in Idle."

@Daniel67786787 added: "Two #squawk7700-Ermergency-signals at the same time. #TUI-Flight #BY216 /#TOM5GM #GOBYK circling around #Manchester and #Liverpool-area for over 2.5 Hours. Seems on runway approach now."

A Manchester Airport spokesman said they were aware of a 'flight that has decided to return to Manchester'.

TUI has been contacted for comment.
